Vietnam is the country with the largest dragon fruit planting area and output in Asia and is also the world's leading exporter of dragon fruit.
The area of growing dragon fruit in Vietnam has increased rapidly from 5,512 hectares in 2000 to 35,665 hectares, with a total output of about 614.35 thousand tons in 2014.
In 2015, the growing area was expanded by nearly 5,000 hectares, the output reached approximately 686.2 thousand tons. In 2017, dragon fruit production reached 952.8 thousand tons, with a 14.2 percent increase compared to 2016 output.
Currently there are 32 provinces and cities growing dragon fruit with a total area of more than 25,000 ha, with an output of over 460,000 tons per year, mainly from Binh Thuan, Tien Giang and Long An.
The combined area for growing dragon fruit of these three provinces accounts for 92 percent of the total area and 96% of the country's output.
The remaining dragon fruit area is distributed in some Southern provinces such as Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Tay Ninh and Ba Ria - Vung Tau and some Northern provinces./.
