A new set of postage stamps entitled ‘Vietnamese Primates’ will beissued in 2014 to commemorate the 25th International Conference onPrimates, to be held for the first time in Vietnam.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Information and Communication and the Vietnam Post Corporation.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s(IUCN) "Red List", there are seven species of criticallyendangered primates in Vietnam, as well as nine endangered primatespecies and seven vulnerable species at risk of becoming endangered.
According to the IUCN, 90% of Vietnam's primate species liveunder the threat of extinction. For this reason, experts on primates andinternational conservation have named five species located in Vietnamto the list of the world’s 25 most endangered primates.
Thestamp initiative, featuring rarely-seen primates endemic to Vietnam,aims to contribute to the conservation of the primates and otherendangered wildlife.-VNA
