SEA Games 33: Women’s handball clinches gold, wrestling opens account with first title

Hanoi (VNA) - On the afternoon of December 17, Vietnamese sports fans were greeted with a series of positive results across multiple disciplines, highlighted by the women’s handball team winning gold and wrestling securing its first gold medal.

Wrestler Nguyen Cong Manh delivered the first gold medal for Vietnam’s wrestling team at this SEA Games. His victory not only opened the gold-medal account for the sport but also provided a morale boost for the entire delegation on a crucial competition day.

Celebrations continued as Vietnam’s women’s handball team put in a commanding performance, defeating host Thailand 24–16 in the final to claim the championship.

In boxing, Nguyen Huyen Tran offered further encouragement after defeating a Myanmar opponent to advance to the women’s 57kg final, keeping Vietnam’s gold hopes alive in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese archers added to the medal haul. Trieu Huyen Diep secured a silver medal in the women’s individual recurve event following a hard-fought final against an Indonesian rival. In the men’s individual event, Nguyen Minh Duc won bronze after a 6–2 victory over a Malaysian opponent, while Loc Thi Dao also claimed bronze in the women’s individual recurve.

In Muay Thai, Duong Duc Bao earned a silver medal in the men’s 48kg category after losing to host athlete Suphanat Phetrak in the final./.

Deputy PM sends off para athletes to ASEAN Para Games 13

Vietnam will send a delegation of 185 members to the 13th ASEAN Para Games in Thailand from January 15-27, 2026. They include 141 athletes, 27 coaches, and 17 officials, competing in 11 sports including athletics, swimming, weightlifting, badminton, table tennis, chess, judo, boccia, archery, tennis, and fencing.

SEA Games 33: Shooting, Wushu secure silvers

On the Wushu mat, Dang Tran Phuong Nhi secured a silver medal after competing in the women’s southern fist, southern staff and southern broadsword events, finishing with a total score of 29.112 points.
