The Party and State always bear in mind the great contributions rendered by former revolutionary prisoners to national independence, State President Truong Tan Sang stated while receiving these people in Hanoi on August 27.
The cordial meeting took place in anticipation with the 70 th anniversary of August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2).
The President told his guests that the Party and State have been persisting in safeguarding national independence and territorial integrity.
He also assured them that the fight against corruption and wastefulness will be sped up for the country’s fast, sustainable development.
Former prisoners and the President recalled the days when Vietnamese people united in the struggle against foreign invaders.
During the two resistance wars against French and US forces, tens of thousands of revolutionaries were imprisoned and brutally tortured by foreign aggressors, but they remained loyal to the revolutionary cause and contributed importantly to the nation’s ultimate triumphs.
The guests raised their worries about the shortcomings of the market economy and its effects on society, and suggested continuing efforts to build a strong, pure Party and be proactive in international integration and reforms for people to live in a democratic, fair and civilized society.-VNA
