Stocks drop on inflation worries

While most media forecast inflation to reach 2 percent this month, a TV stock market report late March 14 cited a Ministry of Industry and Trade source who tipped 3 perent.

On the HCM Stock Exchange, the VN-Index lost another 2.33 percent to finish at 468.74 points. Trading value dropped by 13 percent to 812.7 billion VND (38.7 million USD) with just over 37.6 million shares changing hands.

Losers outnumbered gainers by 147-69.

Blue chips continued to slump, with many losing almost 5 percent of their value – the most they can lose in a single session – including insurer Bao Viet Holdings (BVH), property developers Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAG) and Vincom (VIC), financial Masan Group (MSN) and resort developer VinpearlLand (VPL).

Some went against the trend and posted gains, including Vietnam-Italy Steel (VIS) up 5 percent, Tu Liem Urban Development (NTL) 4.3 percent, industrial Hoa Phat Group (HPG) 2.8 percent and Vietinbank (CTG) 1.5 percent.

CTG was also the most active stock with 2.37 million shares changing hands, of which foreign investors bought up to 80 percent of the total.

On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index declined 0.96 percent to close at 91.04 points.

Both trading volume and value decreased around 40 percent to just 28.5 million shares worth almost 426 billion VND (20.3 million USD), with decliners continuing to outnumber advancers by 229-60.

Kim Long Securities (KLS) was again the most heavily traded share on the northern bourse with 2.84 million shares exchanged, losing another 3.9 percent to close at 9,800 VND (0.47 USD).

Foreign investors became net sellers of almost 48 billion VND (2.3 million USD) worth of shares in HCM City , but they were still net buyers of over 19 billion VND (916,700 USD) worth of shares in Hanoi . /.
