Storm-proof houses for low income residents

Local authorities have worked with the United Nations Development Programme to provide hundreds of storm-proof houses for the poor living in coastal area.

With unpredictable weather abnormalities and extreme climate change, people in the coastal areas in central Vietnam are suffering unfathomable losses. Local authorities have worked with the United Nations Development Programme to provide hundreds of storm-proof houses for the poor living in coastal area.

Just like many other poor household in Thua Thien-Hue province, Nguyen Thi Mua’s family struggles with building a storm-proof house to keep them safe during the rainy season.

Mua and her husband are unable to work so a house seems a far-fetched dream for them.

Now, thanks to UNDP-Green Climate Fund project that benefits coastal communities vulnerable to climate-related impact in Vietnam, she can afford a storm-resistant house.

Vinh Hai commune for years has witnessed erosion at an alarming rate, which coupled with climate change has affected many households, some losing agricultural land and their houses. Thua Thien-Hue authorities and the project’s inspectors are working around the clock to provide its residents with safe housing before the storm season.

This year, 135 households will be provided with storm-proof houses. Moreover, the project also offers support on management of disaster risks information system for coastal areas to reduce losses and ensure better life quality./.-VNA
