Strengthening protection of migrant workers in ASEAN

A conference was held in Phnom Penh , Cambodia on April 4 to discuss measures to increase partnership among members of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in protecting and promoting the rights of migrant workers.

The three-day meeting focused on the role of members of parliament in the issue.

Addressingthe opening ceremony, Cambodian National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrinsaid migration for job seeking is posing great challenges to bothfamilies and society, including the trafficking and exploitation ofwomen and children.

The challenges not only threaten thelife of the victims, but also cause difficulties to their families andsociety as a whole, he said.

Therefore, the most importantissue is to seek appropriate method and measures to protect thesepeople, not to prevent the flow of migrant workers.

Chairman ofthe Cambodia NA’s Committee for Economy, Finance, Banking and Auditalso stressed the protection and promotion of migrant workers requiredthe involvement of all related parties.

The ASEAN Declarationon the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers waspassed in 2007. The region now has nearly 600 million people, accountingfor 8.8 percent of the world’s population, and a 263 million strongworkforce./.

Vietnam calls for stronger ASEAN unity, resilience

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Hoang Giang urged ASEAN to make full use of existing mechanisms to enhance dialogue, build trust and prevent risks and conflicts, particularly by strengthening the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ), and cooperation based on international law.

Vietnam steps up trade, investment promotion at China-ASEAN Expo

According to the CAEXPO Secretariat, Vietnam will once again lease an entire exhibition area of about 3,000sq.m, featuring 170 booths, making it one of the ASEAN countries with the largest exhibition spaces at this year’s event. Nearly 100 Vietnamese businesses have confirmed their participation, including major brands such as Trung Nguyen Group, TH Group, Saigon Coffee and Biti’s.

Vietnam reaffirms commitment to building resilient, inclusive and integrated ASEAN Labour Market

To this end, Vietnam proposed three strategic priorities for ASEAN cooperation. First, ASEAN should expand and harmonise mutual recognition mechanisms by increasing the scope and number of Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRAs) in the region; and promote the role of the ASEAN TVET Council (ATC) in connecting national skills certification systems with regional and global standards, based on national occupational skills qualification frameworks and regional references.
