Hanoi (VNA) - A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's Moluccas Islands on the morning of March 24, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake struck in the sea, 147 km (92 miles) northwest of the city of Ternate and at a depth of 76.5 km.
This was the second quake hitting Indonesia in the same morning as hours earlier, a 5.4-magnitude quake struck the island of Sulawesi.

There were no immediate tsunami warnings and no immediate reports of damage from both quakes.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide.

Last September, a 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island killed more than 2,200, with a thousand more declared missing.

On December 26, 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck Aceh province, causing a tsunami and killing more than 170,000 in Indonesia.-VNA
