Taekwondo clinches first gold medal

Taekwondo martial artists took their first gold medal for Vietnam on the morning of the seventh day of the 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore, helping Vietnam maintain its second place with 58 gold medals.

Nguyen Minh Van and Nguyen Minh Tudelivered a strong performance to earn 78.9 points and rank first in themixed pair poomsae final.

Malaysia came in second with 78.1 and Singapore got the bronze with 76.7.

In athletics, gold hopeful Quach Cong Lich finished first in heat 1of the men’s 400-metre event to advance to the final.

In archery, Nguyen Tien Cuong beat Sapriatno Sapriatno of Indonesiain the semi-finals to reach the final in the men’s individual compoundevent.

In the men’s basketball, Vietnam earned their first win after beating Myanmar 96-68.

The team will face Cambodia in the last match.-VNA

The standout achievement came in the Sanda (combat) events, where Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy and Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hien claimed gold medals after impressive victories over opponents from China and Hong Kong (China), respectively. Thu Thuy edged out Zhang Xiaoyu in the 60kg category with a 2-1 win, while Ngoc Hien dominated her 56kg bout 2-0.
