Vietnam’s representative offices in Japan immediately contacted local authorities through the international affairs divisions of Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Oita and Miyazaki prefectures, as well as Vietnamese community associations in the affected areas, to assess the situation and stand ready to provide timely assistance for Vietnamese citizens impacted by the disaster.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc extended condolences to his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe over great losses of life and property in recent earthquakes in Kumamoto prefecture and surrounding areas.

Vietnam sympathised with the Japanese Government and people over losses sparked by fresh consecutive earthquakes, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Le Hai Binh has said.

There has not been any information about Vietnamese casualties in a 6.5 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan’s southwestern island of Kyushu late on April 14.
