Tan Cheng Bock says he will run for Singapore President

Singapore (VNA) – Former presidential candidate Tan Cheng Bock confirmed his plan to contest the next Singaporean Presidential Election.

Speaking to the media at a press conference on March 11, Tan Cheng Bock, 75, said it is time to reveal his decision, 17 months before the election so that he can start preparations.

In the last Presidential Election in 2011, he garnered 738,311 (34.85 per ent) of a total of 2,156,389 valid votes, losing to incumbent President Tony Tan Keng Yam by just 7,382 votes or 0.34 percent.

The other two candidates are Tan Jee Say and Tan Kin Lian.

The next Presidential Election must be held by August next year.

Singapore’s first President took office in 1965, when the republic was established.-VNA
