Bangkok (VNA) – Thai Airways is considering to cancel six air routes to four Southeast Asian nations, including Vietnam.

President of Thai Airways International (THAI) Sumeth Damrongchaitham said the national flag carrier is set to cancel six direct flights to Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam.

All the routes connects Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport to Vientiane, Luang Prabang (Laos), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh (Vietnam) and Yangon (Myanmar).

These routes are all covered by a small number of flights and have low customer capacity, he said adding that once the cancellation plan is finalised, THAI will assign Thai Smile Airways, a low-cost airline owned by THAI, to cover these routes instead.

Sumeth further explained that competition had become fiercer, with every airline dropping prices to stay ahead of its rivals.

Earlier, THAI announced its restructuring plan which included the possibility of canceling or postponing the purchase of 38 new aircraft, worth 1.5 billion THB or about 49.5 million USD. It also plans to take out a 3.2 billion THB loan next year for investment, purchase of equipment and fleet maintenance./.
