Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s general election must be carried out based on regulations and the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO)’s decrees, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said on February 27.

After registration on March 1, new political parties can organise meetings to discuss important issues like parties’ charters, he stated, noting that apart from that any activity will need to receive approval by the NCPO.

After the bills on the election of members of parliaments and the selection of senators are passed in March, they will be submitted for royal endorsement. The laws are expected to come into effect in June, after which the 150-day countdown to the election will begin, the government leader said.

Earlier, he said that the general election will be held no later than February 2019, three months later than the deadline he previously announced.

The election date has been delayed by the National Legislative’s amendment to the constitution's organic law on the election of members of parliament, he said.-VNA
