Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand's former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has not obtained a UK passport, Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said on December 4.

His announcement followed earlier news reports that Yingluck was given a UK passport after she had reportedly sought political asylum in the UK.

Don said the UK Embassy in Bangkok has not filed any report about Yingluck to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Thai media earlier reported that Yingluck was seeking political asylum in the UK after she had secretly left Thailand for the United Arab Emirates in August.

On September 27, the Supreme Court of Thailand delivered a final verdict and sentenced Yingluck to a five-year jail term on duty negligence and misconduct charges pertaining to a rice programme which had been implemented by her Puea Thai Party-led government and reportedly incurred about 14  billion USD in state losses several years ago.-VNA
