Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s upcoming general electionwill strictly follow all laws and regulations concerned, stated Chairman of theThai Election Commission (EC) Supachai Somcharoen.
Speaking at a ceremony to mark the EC’s 20th foundinganniversary on June 9, the official said according to the constitution, ECmembers must be honest and politically neutral.
He said it is beyond his ability to foresee if anyunexpected incidents would occur before or during the election of MPs ashappened in the past.
He called for the people’s cooperation with the EC incombating election fraud.
Regarding concerns over the reduced number of constituenciesfrom 375 to 350, which would affect some political parties’ support base,Somchai said this is based on the new constitution.
Mr Somchai affirmed that the EC is ready for the forthcomingselection of senators and election of MPs as the drafts of related regulationsare now ready.
In last May, Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said thatthe general election will be held no later than February 2019. -VNA
