The Communist Party of Vietnam’s General Secretary, Nong Duc Manh, has urged Thai Nguyen province to become an industrial hub and city of education for the northern mountainous region.
The Party leader told provincial authorities at the provincial Party congress on October 21 that the province should take the most of its traditional advantages, citing steel production, which should make more high quality products to service other industries in addition to construction steel.
He also called on the mountainous province to fully tap its natural resources, expand the power and construction materials sectors as well as its precious metals industry.
“Thai Nguyen should concentrate on ordinary people and social welfare, by focusing more on education and training, healthcare, job creation, poverty reduction and people from ethnic minority groups living in remote areas”
“The province should work hard to turn itself into an industrial and training centre for the nation, an economic hub and a city of culture and healthcare and an economic hub of northern Hanoi ” said the Party leader.
The Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party committee and Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, Pham Xuan Duong, highlighted the province’s economic growth, which has reached 11.11 percent annually for the past five years, overtaking the national average.
The economy has been constantly restructured to focus more on industry-construction and services with their respective shares rising from 38.71 percent to 41.6 percent and from 35 percent to 37 percent in the past five years.
The province’s per-capita income is estimated at 17.4 million VND (roughly 950 USD) in 2010, a 2.9 fold increase compared to 2005.
The province has upgraded 320 schools, or half of the total number, to national standards and medical centres in 150 villages to meet national standards.
The poverty rate is expected to drop to 11 percent by the end of this year./.
