Bangkok (NNT/VNA) – Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has presided over the planting of a sapling of the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree given to Thailand by Sri Lanka as a kind gesture to the Thai government.

The sapling was planted in Ayutthaya province. The February 19 ceremony was witnessed by high-ranking officials including Gamini Jayawickrama Perera, Minister of Buddhasasana and Wayamba Development of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, who is currently visiting Thailand as special envoy of the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

The sapling is intended to commemorate the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and to bless the reign of King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun.

It came from the most sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree in Sri Lanka’s ancient city, Anuradhapura. The tree is the oldest remaining offshoot of the original Sri Maha Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya, India, under which the Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. In this connection, the presentation of the sapling reflects Sri Lanka’s determination to further strengthen its relations with Thailand.-NNT/VNA
