Bangkok (NNT/VNA) – Representatives of the private sectors of Thailand and the United Kingdom have participated in the 3rd Thai-UK Business Leadership Council Meeting, during which a focus was placed on their cooperation in trade and investment.

Following its establishment in 2016, the Thai-UK Business Leadership Council convened its third meeting, attended by Thai entrepreneurs led by Minister of Commerce Sontirat Sontijirawong and their British counterparts led by British Ambassador to Thailand Brian Davidson.

The Bangkok meeting was called to review progress under various cooperation frameworks agreed upon during the previous gathering, with particular concentration on the drafting of a free trade agreement (FTA) between the Thai and British governments.

Initially, the two sides were resolved to set up a joint working group within the year to expedite the FTA formulation process while the UK prepares to withdraw from the European Union. Future negotiations will be arranged whenever both countries are ready.

Minister Sontirat disclosed that the Thai government has agreed with a proposal by the business leaders from the UK for Thailand to ensure greater convenience for foreign investors, especially those doing business in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).

He said laws pertaining to foreign businesses in Thailand will be amended in line with international standards in the hope of drawing more investors to the Kingdom.-VNA
