Eight soldiers were killed in a bomb explosion in Thailand’s southern province of Yala on June 29, while four other people, including two civilians, were wounded.
According to a Thai Armed Forces spokesperson, the explosion happened in the province’s Krong Pinang district when 10 soldiers were on patrol near their camp in the locality.
The bomb, which was buried in the road, also destroyed the truck carrying the soldiers.
No organisation has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, which was believed to be a popular form of attacks on security staff launched by militant insurgents in the region.
Since violence erupted in 2004, more than 5,500 people have been killed in the southern provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat.
Earlier this year, the Thai Government held its first peace talks with representatives of Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN), one of the major insurgent groups in southern Thailand. However, no agreement was reached and the violence has yet been stopped.-VNA
