Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak will sign a cooperation agreement with Japan to implement eight major development projects, including the construction of Bangkok – Chiang Mai high-speed railway line using Japanese technology during his visit to Tokyo from June 4-6.
According to Minister of Transport Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, the draft agreement was approved by the Thai cabinet on May 30.
Deputy PM Somkid will discuss the eight projects with representatives from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
The two sides will talk about the ongoing studies on rail development, advice on trade development along the route, and the development of a 635km high-speed railway from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.
The feasibility report on the railway will be completed this year.
Thailand agreed to adopt the Shinhansen (Japanese high-speed train) technology for the construction of the railway, which will be divided into two parts: Bangkok-Phitsanulok and Phitsanulok-Chiang Mai.
Also among the eight projects are two new high-speed railway projects, including a transnational route linking Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).
The other is from Bangkok to Rayong province, belonging to the Eastern Economic Corridor. The Thai Government plans to build 10 modern industries, including smart electronics and new-generation vehicles.
Another four projects are being studied and financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), including a project to develop commercial areas near a rail route from Kanchanburi province to Aranyaprathet border checkpoint, a rail system for goods transport, and a rail route linking Nakhon Sawan and Khon Kaen under the East-West Economic Corridor project.-VNA
