Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand and Myanmar have passed a project to develop a border road at the 8th meeting of Thailand-Myanmar Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) for the comprehensive development of Dawei Special Economic Zone and related projects.
According to Thai media on July 4, the meeting was chaired by Thai Transport Minister Akom Termpitayapaisit and Myanmar Commerce Minister Than Myint on June 30. The two sides agreed on construction of a road connecting the economic zone in Myanmar to the border with Thailand.
In the first stage, the Thai Government offered a loan of 4.5 billion THB (over 132 million USD) to build a 138-kilometre road linking Thailand with Myanmar. The loan will be disbursed in form of infrastructure investment. However, the Myanmar Government said it needs time to consider Thailand’s proposal.
The two sides also agreed to establish two special committees to study the implementation of related projects within three months. The research results will be presented at the ninth JCC meeting in October.-VNA
