Thailand tops ASEAN in trade with Myanmar

Thailand topped the list of Myanmar’s five ASEAN trade partners with over 3.87 billion USD during the period from April 2016 to February 2017.
Hanoi (VNA) – Thailand toppedthe list of Myanmar’s five ASEAN trade partners with over 3.87 billion USD during the period from April 2016 to February 2017.

It was followed by Singapore with 2.649 billion USD, Malaysia with 825 millionUSD, Indonesia with 719 million USD and Vietnam with 428 million USD.

Myanmar’s bilateral trade with thePhilippines recorded 51 million USD but that with Brunei, Laos and Cambodiashowed lower than 3 million USD.

In general, Myanmar’s trade with theAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) hit 8.5 billion UD in the lastfiscal year 2016-17 as of February, one month before the end of the fiscalyear, according to the official figures released April 30.

Of the total, Myanmar's export to theregion's trading partners stood at 2.85 billion USD, while its import from themwas 5.7 billion USD.

According to statistics, Myanmar'strade with ASEAN member countries was over 10.4 billion USD in 2015-16.

Myanmar exports to the region agricultural products, marine products, mineraland finished industrial goods, while importing from the region consumers goods,electronic products, capital goods, automobile and accessories and intermediategoods.-VNA

Vietnam steps up trade, investment promotion at China-ASEAN Expo

According to the CAEXPO Secretariat, Vietnam will once again lease an entire exhibition area of about 3,000sq.m, featuring 170 booths, making it one of the ASEAN countries with the largest exhibition spaces at this year’s event. Nearly 100 Vietnamese businesses have confirmed their participation, including major brands such as Trung Nguyen Group, TH Group, Saigon Coffee and Biti’s.

To this end, Vietnam proposed three strategic priorities for ASEAN cooperation. First, ASEAN should expand and harmonise mutual recognition mechanisms by increasing the scope and number of Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRAs) in the region; and promote the role of the ASEAN TVET Council (ATC) in connecting national skills certification systems with regional and global standards, based on national occupational skills qualification frameworks and regional references.
