Bangkok (VNA) - Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan on Nov 18 revealed a joint plan with Malaysia to build a fence wall along their borders.

General Prawit Wongsuwan said that he discussed the idea with his Malaysian counterpart during an informal ASEAN meeting that took place on November 16-17 in Vientiane, Laos.

“We recommended setting up a joint committee with Malaysia for discussions of issues such as problems about transnational crime, human trafficking and a border fence,” General Prawit told reporters at the Government House.

General Prawit also confirmed that the fence project would be jointly funded by Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

According to the defense ministry’s spokesman Major Kongcheep Tantravanich, the idea of a joint single border fence would build upon existing structures, built separately by the two nations. The joint fence would be managed by both sides.

Thailand’s southern border region is known for various security issues such as human trafficking networks, smuggling rings and a Muslim separatist insurgency that has claimed at least 6,500 lives so far.-VNA
