The ninth Lao National Assembly elected Thongloun Sisoulith as President of Laos during its ongoing first session on March 22 morning.

Vientiane (VNA) – The ninth Lao National Assemblyelected Thongloun Sisoulith as President of Laos during its ongoing firstsession on March 22 morning. 

With 161 approval votes out of 163, General Secretary of theLao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee Sisoulith won thepresidency for the 2021-2025 tenure.

Meanwhile, Pany Yathotou and Bounthong Chitmany were electedas Vice Presidents.

Earlier the same day, the Lao NA elected SaysomphonePhomvihane as NA Chairman and Phankham Viphavanh as Prime Minister.

The legislature also approved a list of Cabinet memberssubmitted by the new Prime Minister.  

The session, which opened on March 22 and will last untilMarch 26, is scheduled to decide a number of issues vital to the country, in particularpersonnel matters related to the government and judicial apparatus.

Lawmakers are expected to discuss and adopt several importantreports, including those on the general elections’ results and the eligibilityof deputies of the ninth NA, socio-economic development and budget plans forthe next five years, and the NA’s working plan for the entire tenure, amongothers./.

Malaysia detects 556 fuel-related violations in two months

KPDN Enforcement Director Azman Adam said on May 10 that authorities had made 161 arrests, with the total value of seized goods estimated at 23.17 million MYR (5.9 million USD). Diesel-related offences accounted for the largest number of cases at 249, followed by petrol-related violations with 119 cases.

Former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra released on parole
