Hanoi (VNA) – The Hanoi People’s Court will open atrial of the case of abusing position and power to appropriate assets at thePetroVietnam Exploration Production Corporation (PVEP) on May 6.

This is the fourth of a series of cases in connection withthe payment of extra interests at the OceanBank that involved Ha Van Tham, formerChairman of the Board of Directors of OceanBank.

Three defendants in the case areDo Van Khanh, former Director General of the PVEP, Nguyen Tuan Hung, formerhead of PVEP’s Financial Department, and Vu Thi Ngoc Lan, former DeputyDirector General of PVEP. They are charged with abusing position and power toappropriate property under Article 355 of the 2015 Penal Code.

According to the indictment, thePVEP engaged in transactions on deposits of fixed and non-fixed terms atOceanBank during 2009-2014 under the direction of the Vietnam National Oil andGas Group (PetroVietnam) on prioritising financial services of OceanBank, towhich PetroVietnam contributed 20 percent of the charter capital.

As the then Director General of PVEP, Khanhassigned Lan, who was then Deputy Director General in charge of finance,accounting and auditing, to approve and sign the deposit contracts withOceanBank. Meanwhile, Hung was the person drafting and submitting the contractsto Lan for approval.

At the instruction of Ha Van Tham, then Chairmanof the Board of Directors of OceanBank, on paying extra interest which was notstated in contracts to all clients who deposited money in the bank, then DeputyDirector General of OceanBank Nguyen Thi Minh Phuong and some other executivesof the bank paid more than 51.8 billion VND (2.23 million USD) in extrainterest to Hung. 

Meanwhile, Khanh received more than 4 billionVND from Hung, and Lan received 200 million VND from Phuong.

Two wanted for abusing religious cover to undermine national unity policy

The fugitives are Di (also known as Siu Di), born in 1941, and Dinh Yum (also known as Dinh Jum or Ba Koih), born in 1963, from Ba Na ethnic minority group in Gia Lai province, and hold Vietnamese nationality. They have been charged under Clause 1, Article 116 of the Penal Code for undermining the national unity policy.

Support delivered to Khmer households for traditional New Year
