Tua Chua elevates local specialty tea quality

Tua Chua district in the northwestern province of Dien Bien boasts nearly 600 hectares of tea, including 8,000 ancient Shan Tuyet tea trees. Aiming to make tea a key industrial crop, local authorities are focusing on sustainable value chains, attracting investment, and expanding markets. These efforts strengthen the Tua Chua tea brand, boost economic growth, and provide stable livelihoods for local residents.

The family of Giang A Tung, in Tao Pao hamlet, Sinh Phinh commune, owns over 5,000 square meters of low-grown tea. With proper care, technical adherence, and investment, the tea plantation has grown steadily. Each year, it yields nearly 2 tonnes of fresh tea buds, providing a stable income for the family.

Huong Linh Co., Ltd., which produces three One Commune One Product (OCOP) 3-star certified tea products, collaborates with over 500 households in the district to grow and purchase Shan Tuyet ancient tea. The company has also invested in high-grown ancient tea areas certified as organic. Annually, it markets around 8 tonnes of tea locally and internationally.

Since 2019, Tua Chua district has prioritised standardising tea production with a chain-linked production model to establish tea as a key industrial crop. Efforts include implementing safe tea production processes under VietGAP standards and supporting the development of tea products through the OCOP programme. These initiatives aim to preserve and enhance the value of Shan Tuyet tea while prioritising trade promotion and product marketing.

In 2024, Tua Chua expects to harvest 120 tonnes of fresh tea buds, produce 25 tonnes of processed tea, and achieve four 3-star OCOP certified products. Tea development boosts the local economy, creates stable incomes, and unlocks tourism potential. With strategic investment and community support, Tua Chua tea is poised to thrive as a proud symbol of Dien Bien./.
