The powerful typhoon Koppu hit the northern Philippines early October 18, forcing the evacuation of about 6,500 people, according to local media.

The country’s weather service said the typhoon landed on the coastal town of Casiguran, 215 kilometres northeast of the capital Manila, at around 4 am (local time) with wind of up to 210 kilometres an hour, and did not seem to move.

The typhoon downed trees and power pylons in the provinces of Aurora and Isabela, resulting in power cut in those areas.

Meanwhile, intense rains caused landslides and overflowing rivers, cutting off several roads across the region. About 330 passengers have been stranded in the region’s seaports.

The weather service warned that Koppu is likely to linger for days in the main island of Luzon, home to about 50 million people and alerted the southern regions to prepare against strong winds and rain.-VNA
