Hanoi (VNA) – Typhoon Tembin has killed 200 people and left dozens of others missing after wreaking havoc to the Philippines on December 22, Philippine police reported on December 23 night.
Of the death toll, 135 people were reported in Northern Mindanao, 47 on the Zamboanga peninsula during the storm, and 18 in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
Local authorities warned that the number of victims may continue to rise, while search and rescue activities have been underway.
Tembin also caused serious floods and landslides in Mindanao, the second largest island of the Philippines, completely buried a remote village. Boasting wind speed of 80 km per hour, the storm destroyed many power transmission lines and blocked many streets in Lanao Del Norte province.
Each year, the Southeast Asian country suffers from about 20 storms and heavy losses in both human lives and property. The devastated Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 killed 8,000 people and made about 200,000 others homeless.-VNA
