UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has expressed his satisfaction with the role Vietnam has played in the United Nations.
In an interview by Vietnam News Agency’s reporter on the occasion of his visit to Hanoi to attend the UN-ASEAN Summit on Oct. 28-30, the UN chief said Vietnam has been a very responsible member and strengthened the partnership between Vietnam and the UN since it joined the organisation in 1977.
He cited Vietnam’s contribution to peace and security in the region and the world through non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council in 2009-2010 term, and its active role in the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), noting that the country is likely to meet most of the MDGs by 2015.
Ban Ki-moon particularly appreciated Vietnam ’s contribution to the UN Delivering as One initiative and said he hoped for great leadership from Vietnam in working together with the UN in major issues, such as climate change, MDGs and human rights.
“Now working as the chair of ASEAN this year again is a testament of your growing role as a global and regional leader, and I wish you all the best at the forthcoming ASEAN-UN Summit Meeting and also the ASEAN Summit meeting,” said the UN Chief.
“I am looking forwards to strengthening further the relationship between the UN and ASEAN as a whole as your country VN is chairing this ASEAN-UN Summit and chair of ASEAN,” he said.
Regarding the role of ASEAN as a regional organisation in the international arena and in the relationship with the UN, especially when Vietnam is ASEAN Chair in 2010, the UN Secretary General affirmed “ASEAN and UN have been maintaining a very good cooperative relationship.”
ASEAN and the UN have signed an MOU between the two secretariats in 2007 just after he became the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon said, adding that he participated in ministerial meeting with 10 ASEAN Foreign Ministers and is going to participating in the summit meeting this year, which he described as a very good mechanism that needs to further develop and strengthen.
He said he hoped that Vietnam , as chair of ASEAN, will demonstrate the great leadership in furthering the cooperation between UN and ASEAN.
The UN chief also noted that ASEAN has been participating and contributing greatly to UN peace keeping operations as well as in many humanitarian assistance in Haiti and Pakistan .
The upcoming ASEAN Summit and ASEAN-UN Summit is a great opportunity for ASEAN to further expand political feasibility and contributions to the world’s peace security and development, he said.
Discussing prospects of cooperation between ASEAN and the UN in the future in terms of security, development and human rights, the UN chief suggested the bloc consolidate further the integration process of ASEAN and also expand such cooperative relations with the Republic of Korea, China, Japan, India, Australia, New Zealand, and Russia.
Ban Ki-moon also pledged further strengthening ASEAN-UN partnership in his capacity as UN Secretary General.
“We want to see a more increasing role and feasibility of ASEAN within UN system.”
Having visited Vietnam twice as RoK foreign minister, he said he was impressed by the dynamic development of Vietnam despite the fact that it is one of the countries devastated by wars and of five most affected countries globally by climate change. He said “I am looking forwards to visiting the country and observing how such a great strive Vietnam has made in socio-economic and political fields,” said the UN Secretary General./.
