UN pledges to help Vietnam combat crime

UN Under-Secretary General Yury Fedotov has committed to continue support and cooperation with Vietnam to combat crime and drug trafficking.    

UN Under-Secretary General Yury Fedotov has committed to continue support and cooperation with Vietnam to combat crime and drug trafficking.     

Fedotov, who is also the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drug and Crimes (UNODC), made the statement at a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in Hanoion December 4.   

The UN official applauded the Vietnamese Government for its significant achievements in reducing crime with nationwide measures and cooperation at regional and international levels.    

Phuc welcomed Fedotov’s visit at a time when   Vietnam   celebrates its 35 th  anniversary of entering the UN as its 149 th  member. He affirmed that the country fully adheres to the UN Conventions on crime and drug prevention, and is exerting every effort to fulfill its commitments.   

He suggested that UN agencies continue assisting the Vietnamese Government and relevant bodies to successfully implement the 2012 – 2016 Joint Plan and other National Plans.   

Assistance should be fueled by cooperative projects concerning policy consultation, legal document development, task-force enhancement and campaigns to raise awareness of the issue, he added.-VNA
