Thai Nguyen (VNA) – Vietnam has to date had 2,884 communes, or32.3 percent of the total, recognised as new-style rural areas.

The information was announced on December 23 at a conferencein the northern province of Thai Nguyen to sum up the 2014-2017 United NationsJoint Programme (UNJP) supporting the National Target Programme on New RuralDevelopment (NTP-NRD).

The UNJP armed at providing technical assistance for theNTP-NRD in order to develop potential of Vietnam’s rural areas and coordinatingUN offices’ technical assistance for Vietnam’s new-style rural area building.

It focused on intensifying technology transfer for thecountry’s agricultural production, improve the sector’s climate change responsecapacity, help mobilise social investment in developing rural areas throughrecommendations on rural financial policies, rural development strategies,labour market and education quality.

Chief Representative of the UN Food and AgricultureOriganisation in Vietnam Jong Ha Bae said that during 2014-2017, the UNJPcontributed to raising rural residents’ awareness, improving public investmentand policy and strategy building capacity in rural areas, and monitoring and assessingthe implementation of the NTP-NRD.

The programme helped increase monthly income of ruralresidents and make positive changes in rural development in Vietnam, he stated.

The NTP-NRD, approved in June 2010, listed 19 basiccriteria, including infrastructure, education, health care and culture, as wellas environment and employment, for recognition as a new-style rural area.

It targets 50 percent of communes recognised as new-style ruralareas by 2020.-VNA

Dak Lak completes nearly 90% of plan to eliminate substandard houses

As of July 9, 8,526 houses had been newly built or repaired, including 6,626 new constructions and 1,900 repairs, achieving 89.5% of the target. Over 6,000 houses have been handed over and are now occupied, providing stable accommodation for families benefiting from social policies, as well as low-income and near-poor households.

Banking sector donates 3.1 million USD to housing programme

Since April 2024, the banking sector has committed a total of 1.36 trillion VND to the programme. Of this amount, 1.1 trillion VND has already been disbursed, while the remaining funds will be released following the issuance of allocation guidelines by the Ministry of Ethnic and Religious Affairs (180 billion VND) and the submission of complete documents by localities (85 billion VND).

Vietnam fosters young talent in astrophysics through int'l summer school

Can Tho reports no fishing violations in foreign waters for three years

Can Tho city is now home to 795 registered fishing vessels with a combined capacity of 209,648 horsepower. Among those, 346 vessels measure 15 metres or longer, requiring the installation of monitoring systems, and 28 vessels provide logistical support services to the fishing industry.
