Vientiane (VNA) – US President Barack Obama arrived in Laos on September 5, after attending the 11th G20 Summit in Hangzhou, China.
Obama is the first sitting US president to visit Laos.
The president will attend the ASEAN-US Summit and a series of meetings.
The White House announced on September 5 that the president will not meet his Philippine counterpart, Rodrigo Duterte.
US National Security Council spokesperson Ned Price said the president will meet the Republic of Korean president Park Geun-hye.
Laos may be Obama’s final visit to Asia as president before he leaves office in January next year, but his visit to the Southeast Asian country has reflected the President’s commitment to the rebalancing policy in Asia-Pacific.-VNA
Vietnam’s Prime Minister to attend ASEAN Summits in Laos
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc will lead a Vietnamese delegation to the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits and related meetings in Vientiane, Laos, from September 6 - 8.
