The US said it would back Vietnam in taking legal action to solve the case of China’s illegal installation of its drilling rig in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.
Addressing the press on May 22 (US time), the White House spokesperson Patrick Ventrell said the US supports the use of peaceful measures to address the current tensions in the East Sea. He stressed that the US has a national interest in maintaining peace and stability, respect for international law unimpeded lawful commerce; and freedom of navigation and over flight in the East Sea.
The US supports the use of diplomatic and other peaceful measures to solve disagreements, including the use of arbitration or other international legal mechanisms, he said.
The same day, Vietnamese scholars in the US also agreed it is now a suitable time for Vietnam to take the issue to an international court, but the country needs to consul legal experts in order to build firm legal grounds for its petition.
Dr. Ngo Nhu Binh, Director of the Vietnamese Language Programme in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilisation at Harvard University, told Vietnam News Agency’s New York-based correspondents that experts and scholars in many countries do not accept China’s claim of the nine-dot line in the East Sea, as seen at a seminar on the East Sea held last January in Harvard.-VNA
