US, Vietnam agree on cutting emissions

The governments of the United States and Vietnam on March 21 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation on low emission development in Hanoi .

The signing was held with theparticipation of the US Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energyand Environment Robert Hormats and the Minister of Natural Resources andEnvironment Nguyen Minh Quang.

Under the MoU, Vietnameseand US experts will join hands in developing a national greenhousegas inventory system, identifying sources of emissions for analysis toencourage energy efficiency and production of renewable energy whileoptimising agricultural and forest production.

MinisterQuang said the MoU is an important official starting point marking thecooperation in environmental protection, especially climate changeissues which are now a rising global concern.

Hormatsexpressed concern about the impact of climate change in Vietnam ,especially in the Mekong Delta Region and challenges in energydevelopment facing the country.-VNA
