Vietnam ranked 12 in the list of 22 countries with the largest number of tuberculosis (TB) patients in the world last year, health officials said on Feb. 4.
Multidrug-resistant strains of tuberculosis are affecting around 5,000 people each year, while the rate of tuberculosis sufferers infected with HIV has climbed up to 8.1 percent in 2009 compared with 5 percent the previous year.
The officials told a conference, which was held to review the results of the national anti-tuberculosis programme, that the number of new tuberculosis patients between 15 and 24-years old is growing.
Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Thi Xuyen said that to achieve the targets of the national anti-tuberculosis programme during 2010, the Central Lung Hospital needs to build an anti-tuberculosis network on a national scale and provide more equipment and personnel for hospitals at grassroots levels.
Calling for further support and assistance from organisations both at home and abroad for the work will also be another major task, the deputy minister said./.
