Vietnam has made clear the process of claiming for its sovereignty in the East Sea during a recent East Sea-related seminar in Australia.

The country’s representative also presented legal documents proving Vietnam’s sovereignty over the disputed area in the East Sea at the seminar.

Taking place in Canberra, on March 28, the seminar brought together 50 international scholars, legal, military and security experts, diplomats and critics, to explore the theme on the East Sea and Australia’s regional security environment.

They heard the root cause of the dispute in the East Sea, the role of international law and governance as well as the stance of ASEAN and concerned parties on the East Sea issue.

The participants emphasised the necessity of ensuring stability and avoiding conflicts in the East Sea before a solution to the dispute can be reached.

They agreed that concerned parties in the dispute need to abide by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

They also agreed with ASEAN’s proposal on the creation of the Code of Conduct in the East Sea as well as those on the prevention of conflicts and on cooperation in marine regulations.-VNA
