New York (VNA) – Vietnam reiterated its support for the UN Security Council (UNSC)’s Resolution 2231, which endorses the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran’s nuclear programme (JCPOA), at an UNSC briefing on the implementation of the resolution on June 30. Addressing the meeting, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, Minister Counsellor Nguyen Phuong Tra called on parties involved to seriously implement the document; to restrain themselves and avoid actions that further erode trust and escalate tension; and to focus on dialogue and negotiation to tackle differences.
She affirmed Vietnam’s consistent stance in backing the anti-proliferation and disarmament of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons.
Vietnam welcomes efforts in building an environment of dialogue and cooperation inside and outside the council for peace, stability and development in the Middle East region, Tra said.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo; Head of the EU delegation to the UN Olof Skoog and Ambassador of Ireland Geraldine Byrne Nason who is he Council’s facilitator for the implementation of Resolution 2231 briefed the meeting.
They affirmed the JCPOA and Resolution 2231 remain an important achievement of multilateral diplomacy and non-proliferation efforts, and the best way to promote a comprehensive, lasting and appropriate solution to the Iran nuclear issue, in contribution to regional and international peace and security.
They commended diplomatic efforts made by JCPOA parties regarding the Vienna negotiations and called for full and proper implementation of the JCPOA and Resolution 2231./.
