Vietnam commits to implementing UNSC’s resolutions on counter-terrorism

Ambassador Pham Hai Anh, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN), has affirmed that terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction continue to be a serious threat to peace and international security.

Hanoi (VNA) – Ambassador Pham Hai Anh, DeputyPermanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN), has affirmedthat terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction continue tobe a serious threat to peace and international security.

Addressing a briefing of the UN Security Council (UNSC)’s threecounter-terrorism committees on December 2 on their activities, the Vietnamesediplomat appreciated the work results of the committees, overcomingchallenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining exchanges,strengthening capacity, and sharing information with other countries.

The Ambassador suggested that the committees continue to coordinate activities,provide technical assistance to countries in the implementation of theresolutions of the UNSC. He reaffirmed Vietnam's commitment to fully implementing the UNSC's resolutions on combating terrorism and the proliferation of weaponsof mass destruction and collaborate with UN agencies and all partners on thebasis of the UN Charter and international law.

Speakers at the meeting stressed the importance of cooperation among the threebodies, focusing on the collection of information, terrorist threats includingthe threat of terrorist access and use of weapons of mass destruction, monitorand evaluate the implementation of resolutions of UNSC.

Tunisian Ambassador Tarek Ladeb, Chairman of the 1373 Counter-TerrorismCommittee, said the committee has made great efforts to organise a meeting toprovide information and strengthen the capacity of countries on combatingterrorist financing, emerging threats to assess the implementation ofResolution 1373 and related resolutions.

Norwegian Ambassador Trine Heimerback, Chairman of the 1267/1989/2253 IslamicState in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/Da’esh) and Al-Qaeda Sanctions Committee,said the 1267 committee was reviewing the number of individuals and entities inits sanction list, calling on countries to cooperate and submit reports on theimplementation of Resolution 1267.

Mexican Ambassador Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez, Chair of the 1540 Committee, said the committee continued to provide technical assistance to countries inthe implementation of Resolution 1540, encouraging countries to adopt avoluntary National Plan of Action.

Members of the UNSC spoke highly of the coordination ofactivities between the committees, suggested that the bodies and expert groupscontinue to find ways to adapt to the new circumstances and accelerate thecompletion of the working programme of the Committees, supporting the realisationof relevant resolutions of the UNSC./.
