Hanoi (VNA) - “Sabre queen” Nguyen Thi Le Dung won a ticket to the Rio Olympics on April 12 after her victory against Taiwanese fencer Tiffany Dell’Aquila in the sabre final of the Asia-Pacific zone qualification.

Dung’s victory confirmed a third ticket to Rio this summer for Vietnamese fencers after Nguyen Thi Nhu Hoa (epee) and Vu Thenh An (sabre) secured their own tickets on April 11. Hoa topped the competition in her category and An earned a spot among the top three.

Nguyen Tien Nhat (epee), who was the first Vietnamese fencer to qualify for the Olympics back in 2012, will miss out on Rio after his defeat against Alexander Chernykh from Kyrgysztan on April 12.

With Dung’s victory, Vietnam has secured 12 Olympic slots. The country set a target of sending at least 18 athletes to the Rio de Janeiro Games this summer.-VNA
