Vietnam, Indonesia appreciate EU’s role in boosting multilateralism

Hanoi (VNA) – The UN Security Council on May 28 organised a videoconference on EU-UN cooperation on international peace and security.

For the first time, Vietnam and Indonesia –two ASEAN member states assuming the positions as non-permanent members of theUN Security Council – made a joint speech appreciating the pioneering role ofthe EU in fostering multilateralism.

Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of theVietnamese mission to the UN, and Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani, head of theIndonesian mission to the UN, spoke highly of the EU’s role in maintaininginternational security and peace.

They hoped the EU would continuecoordinating with the UN in addressing conflicts, mediating, providinghumanitarian relief, and boosting multilateralism on the basis of the UNCharter’s principles.

The two diplomats also took the occasion tohighlight ASEAN’s contributions to building a peaceful and prosperous SoutheastAsia, and creating a favourable environment to together with partner countriesbuild trust, consolidate preventive diplomacy, minimise differences, andintensify engagement in issues of mutual concern.

They called on regional organisations,including the EU and ASEAN, to work together to improve the UN’s cooperationactivities, such as the EU supporting the improvement of ASEAN member states’UN peacekeeping missions.

At the event, Josep Borrell, HighRepresentative and Vice- President of the European Commission, affirmed hisbacking for the rules-based international order, with the UN at its core.

“The outbreak of COVID-19 is a test for ourhumanity, but also for the multilateral system itself,” said Borrell. “Thiscrisis demonstrates that global challenges require collective action. Climatechange, COVID-19: these are not problems that any country can solve on itsown”.

UN Security Council member states all showedtheir support for the EU-UN cooperation, while stressing the EU’s role insolving issues related to international security and peace at hot spots,especially in Africa, the Middle East and Balkans./.

Vietnam and the US should maintain stable and sustainable economic, trade, and investment ties, and the US Congress should continue allocating resources to assist Vietnam in addressing war legacy issues, particularly the dioxin remediation project at Bien Hoa Airport, unexploded ordnance clearance, support for persons with disabilities and war victims, and enhanced assistance in searching for, recovering, and identifying missing Vietnamese soldiers.
