Hanoi (VNA) – Minister of Agriculture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Xuan Cuong and Japanese Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Keiichi Ishii signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation on irrigation management and climate change adaptation at a ceremony in Hanoi on August 8.

Under the document, the two sides will intensify collaboration in irrigational planning; building, running and maintaining irrigation works; and sharing experience in adaptation to climate change.

Earlier, in his talk with the Japanese minister, Minister Cuong asked Japan to share its experience to help Vietnam promote irrigational restructuring in the Mekong Delta, and to reduce the consequences of the erosion of the coastline and landslides in the northern mountainous region.

Keiichi Ishii told the host that based on Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s proposal, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will make a survey on Vietnam’s infrastructure to help the country improve it, in order to better respond to climate change and address the consequences caused by drought.

As Japan also faces a water shortage, coastal erosion and landslides, the country is willing to cooperate and share experience with Vietnam in these fields, he added.-VNA
