Vietnam and Laos have signed a bilateral agreement to continue promoting cooperation in economic, cultural and scientific and technological in 2010.

The agreement was signed by Vietnamese and Lao Deputy Prime Ministers Nguyen Sinh Hung and Somsavat Lengsavad at the end of the 32 nd meeting of the Vietnam-Laos inter-governmental committee on cooperation on Jan. 11 in Vientiane .

They will continue the planned bilateral trade development project for 2008-2015, bringing two-way trade value to 1 billion USD by 2010 and 2 billion USD by 2015.

Areas of cooperation cover joint-development capital and investment projects, human resource development, comprehensive development in border area, agro-forestry-fisheries, environmental protection and natural resources, cultural activities, tourism, healthcare and social affairs.

Laos will encourage and give priority to Vietnamese firms for investment in for-export goods production and processing, construction of the Densavan trade zone infrastructure in Savannakhet province and other border gate areas, construction of Vietnam trade centres in Laos and Lao trade centres in Vietnam, and development of urban areas in Vientiane capital city, Luang Prabang and Savannakhet provinces.

They agreed to take stronger steps carrying out the one-gate, one-stop check for goods and means of transport at the international Lao Bao-Densavan border gate under the GMS agreement.

Vietnam-Laos import-export turnover saw a gradual increase of 30-40 per cent annually in recent years. Vietnam’s investment in Laos has impacted on both countries’ economic development. By September 2009, the Lao government had granted licences to 207 projects worth 2.1 billion USD invested by Vietnamese firms.

The meeting also reviewed cooperation in human resource development. In the 2008-2009 academic year, Vietnam received 690 Lao personnel and students. The number of Vietnamese personnel and students in Laos is currently more than 430.

The two sides also agreed to conduct the 33 rd meeting early next year in Vietnam./.
