Phuc, who is also Chairman of the National Committee for HIV/AIDS, Drugsand Prostitution Control, said at a meeting with internationalorganisations that are coordinating the National Programme on HIV/AIDSPrevention and Control, that apart from technical activities, Vietnam’sHIV/AIDS prevention services have expanded immensely, and many legalpolicies have been issued.
With new models to helpdrug addicts and their families, and less discrimination againsthomosexuals, the right environment exists to successfully implement theNational Programme on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control, Phuc said.
He added that the country needs 26.8 trillion VND (1.28 billion USD)to fight HIV/AIDS in the 2013–2020 period. He asked international donorsto finalise their agendas on funding to Vietnam in the time tocome.
Vietnam pledges to increase investmentthrough the National Target Programme on HIV/AIDS Prevention andControl, and mobilise social resources like public-private partnershipsand healthcare insurance to maintain achieved outcomes, he added.
Deborah Chatsis, Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam and President of theHIV/AIDS Prevention Coordination Group, said Vietnam has made asignificant stride against HIV.
She said theinternational community promises to support Vietnam in improving HIVprevention and in the treating and caring of patients living with HIV.
As Vietnam is forecast to become a middle-incomecountry in the region, development partners will gradually withdrawdirect financial assistance, but will maintain technical assistance andpolicy advice, as well as increase ASEAN coordination to fight againstthe scourge.-VNA
