Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has said the hosting of the DPRK-USA Hanoi Summit Vietnam contributes to realising the motto “Vietnam is an active and responsible member of international community” set by the 11th National Party Congress in 2011.

In an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency on the occasion, the PM explained that being a responsible member means proactively engaging in seeking measures to solve regional and global issues, thus bringing peace, stability, and development, which is also in line with the direction made by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong at the Diplomatic Conference in August 2018.

That Hanoi was chosen as the venue for the second summit between the DPRK and the US is clear evidence for Vietnam’s improving role and position in both the region and the world, he said.

PM Phuc noted that after joining the United Nations (UN) in 1977, Vietnam had served as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2008-2009 tenure and is now the only candidate of the Asia-Pacific group for a non-permanent seat on the council for the 2020-2021 tenure.

In the region, Vietnam is an important member of ASEAN and a significant diplomatic partner to countries across the world, he said.

With experience in holding large-scale summits like the APEC Economic Leaders' Week 2017 and the World Economic Forum on ASEAN 2018, Vietnam will do its best to successfully hold the summit, he said.

According to the PM, Hanoi has basically completed the preparations. He expressed hope that via the event, Vietnam will become a bridge for the settlement of the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula and play a role as a partner to build peace on the Korean peninsula and the region.

As ASEAN Chair in 2020 and candidate for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure, Vietnam believes that it can make more active contributions to the peace process on the Korean peninsula, as well as towards peace and sustainable development in the world, the leader stated.

He expressed his belief that as a responsible and dedicated member of the international community, Vietnam will become a trustworthy destination for major international conferences of the region and the world in the future. –VNA
