Bac Lieu (VNA) – Developing globally-recognised Vietnamese shrimpbrand is necessary for the agricultural sector to realise a target of 10billion USD in shrimp export revenue by 2025, according to the insiders.

They raised the issue at a forum jointly held by the Directorate of Fisheriesand the Vietnam Fisheries Society (VINAFIS) in Bac Lieu city in the Mekongdelta province of the same name on June 19.

VINAFIS Chairman Nguyen Viet Thang said that Vietnam is the world’s thirdlargest shrimp producer, and shrimp has accounted for a lion share of 45percent in the Vietnamese seafood exports for years.

Average growth rate of the shrimp production and processing is recorded at 6.82percent each year, he added.

Yet considerable development, experts at the event laid stress on theformidable challenges for Vietnamese shrimp growers in the past two decades, which include export markets, price fluctuation, shrimp diseases and shrimpbreeding.

To that end, they suggested building and managing a complete shrimp value chainas well as traceability system to develop Vietnamese shrimp brand, making theshrimps be sold like hot cakes in the international markets.

According to Deputy General Director of the Directorate of Fisheries Tran DinhLuan, solutions must be outlined to balance supply and demand, and improveconnections between suppliers and producers.-VNA
