Vietnam pledges to carry out a number of activities to cope with the climate change, said Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai.
Hai, who is also Deputy Head of the National Steering Committee for Response to Climate Change, made the remark at a conference in Hanoi on October 28, which saw the participation of sponsors for the Support Programme to Respond to Climate Change (SP-RCC).
Vietnam has exerted efforts to deal with the issue, Hai stressed, adding that climate change is also taken into consideration in the country’s socio-economic development plans and strategies.
The Deputy PM; however, cited poor coordination between these sectors, irregular assessment of climate change projects, and failure to mobilise social human resources as limitations in the field.
He asked ministries, sectors and localities to regularly update scenarios to settle the issue, scrutinise plans to adjust these alternatives, duplicate pilot projects of the National Target Programme to Respond to Climate Change (NTP-RCC), and promote science technology research activities.
SP-RCC donors praised the role of the government in directing the implementation of policies in the SP-RCC programme, and affirmed that they will provide financial support for the country during the 2013-2014 period and the following years.
They will also provide technical assistance in building and realising action plans on climate change adaptation.
Deputy Minister of the Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha said the Prime Minister last year approved the SP-RCC’s 2013 capital allocation for 11 projects with a total cost of 350 billion VND (16.45 million USD).
The beneficiaries include provinces of Hau Giang, An Giang, Kien Giang, Lao Cai, and Lai Chau.
As of June this year, the country disbursed 86.6 billion VND (4.07 million USD), accounting for 21.9 percent of the total capital, which will be fully distributed by late December.-VNA
