State President Nguyen Minh Triet has proposed the United Nationsprovide information and financial assistance to assist Vietnam incoping with climate change as Vietnam is among countries sufferingthe worst consequences of climate change.
TheVietnamese State leader made the proposal while receiving UNSecretary General Ban Ki-moon following an official welcoming ceremonyin Hanoi on Oct. 28.
Vietnam commits toimplementing the UN Resolutions, particularly the implementation of theMillennium Development Goals (MDGs), and highly values the UN’scontributions to peacekeeping, international security, economicdevelopment and ensuring human rights, said President Triet.
He emphasised Vietnam ’s support to Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’sefforts to promote inter-governmental negotiations on the reform of theUN Security Council and enhance connectivity among member organisationsof the UN system towards democratisation, improving its operationalefficiency and caring for member countries’ interests.
President Triet took the occasion to thank the UN for its assistanceand support to Vietnam in its international integration andimplementation of MDGs.
He highlighted UN agencies’activities in Vietnam and said he hoped the UN would continue helpingVietnam in its hunger eradication and poverty reduction programmesand in socio-economic development.
He expressed hishope that the UN would continue bringing into play its role inmaintaining peace, stability and security in the world, promotingdialogue and peacefully settling disputes on the basis of respecting theprinciples of the UN Charter and international law.
Vietnam also proposed the UN support the South-South cooperationmechanism and expand the “One-UN” Initiative, said President Triet.
Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed his good impression ofVietnam ’s land and people and its socio-economic developmentachievements.
Vietnam is a typical nation withmany good experiences in implementing MDGs and promoting the “One-UN”Initiative, said the UN leader.
He congratulatedVietnam on the success of important events during its capacity as ASEANChair, which he said proved Vietnam ’s increasing role and importantinfluence in international and regional issues.
It is time to bring the ASEAN-UN partnership to a new height based on more solid foundations, stressed the UN chief.
He thanked Vietnam for its contributions to the success of thesummit to review the 10-year implementation of the MDGs, expressing hisbelief that Vietnam would finalise eight MDGs in 2015.
