New York (VNA) – Vietnam has welcomed the talks between the Government of Syria and the opposition in the framework of the Constitutional Committee to seek similarities at the end of last August, and stressed the significance of maintaining constructive talks and negotiations.

Speaking at the UN Security Council’s videoconference meeting on the Syrian situation on September 18, Ambassador Pham Hai Anh, deputy head of the Vietnamese mission to the UN, held that the only solution to peace and stability in Syria is political settlement led and owned by Syrian people in line with international law on the foundation of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.

The ambassador underlined the need to maintain security and long-term stability to serve the talks, as well as to promote diplomatic efforts to support the political process and maintain assistance to Syria to deal with socio-economic and humanitarian challenges and COVID-19 pandemic.

At the event, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pederson said that the third round of discussions of the Constitutional Committee, held in August in Geneva, had revealed the possibility to find some common ground between the sides.

However, he said that there were still substantial differences among the sides regarding outstanding problems, stressing the need to early reach agreement on the agenda for the next session, which is slated for early October.

He pledged to work hard to help the parties during the process, and called for the continuous support of the international community, especially Russia and the US, for the diplomatic pathways for implementation of Resolution 2254 of the UN Security Council.

The UN-supported Syria Constitutional Committee was formed in September 2019 with an aim to promote negotiations for the adjustments of the Constitution on the foundation of the political process stated in Resolution 2254. The committee comprises representatives from the Syrian government, opposition and socio-political organisations./.
