Vietnam’s efforts in ensuring equality spotlighted at IPU session

Dhaka (VNA) – NationalAssembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong has highlighted Vietnam’s achievementsin tackling inequality and ensuring fairness for all at the plenary session ofthe 136th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Dhaka,Bangladesh on April 3.

As a developing country that isovercoming historical difficulties, Vietnam is aware of the need for socio-economicdevelopment along with ensuring equality and fairness for all people, shestated.

Vietnam has reached the majorityof the UN Millennium Development Goals with three targets completed ahead ofschedule: poverty reduction, primary school universalisation and gender equalitypromotion and women’s empowerment.

The country has also built anational action plan to implement 17 global sustainable development goals aswell as 169 specific goals stated in the 2030 Agenda with detailed measures to realisegoal 10 on ensuring equal opportunities and reducing inequality.

The NA Vice Chairwoman also notedthat the NA  built the 2013 Constitution,while completing a legal system with various laws, including the Labour Code,Laws on Health Insurance, Gender Equality, Trade Union, Information Access,Youth, Persons with Disabilities, Children Care and Protection, the Elderly andBeliefs and Religions.

Additionally, the country hasissued policies on socio-economic development while improving the living conditionsof ethnic minority groups, she added.

However, she said that Vietnam alsofaces many difficulties such as climate change, limited resources for socialareas and unequal development among regions.

She called for continued supportfrom countries and international organisations in management and governance tofulfill all development goals.

At the session, themed“Redressing inequalities: Delivering on dignity and well-being for all”, NAVice Chairwoman Phong proposed eight recommendations, including thestrengthening of the UN in the field, speeding up the implementation of targetsin the sustainable development goal 10 in each country and reforming theoperation and agenda of multilateral economic, trade and financial organisationsto make sure developing countries can raise their voice at globaleconomic-financial institutions.

It is necessary to develop anetwork connecting regional organisations to respond to non-traditionalsecurity matters such as natural disaster, climate change, sea level rise andpandemics, she stated.

She asked countries to continuecompleting their institutions and enhance the effectiveness of policy making andnational governance to reduce inequality and erase regulations withdiscrimination.

She also called on developedcountries to continue supporting developing ones through sharing experience andtechnology, while encouraging countries to build tools to evaluate inequality.

Parliaments should promote theirlegislative and supervision role over the governments and support governmentsin tackling inequality, she proposed, asking the IPU to continue strengtheningcooperation mechanisms with members in sharing experience.-VNA

Education-training sector preparing for strategic turning point: Minister

Reviewing the sector’s performance in the past five years, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son said the scale of the national education system continued to expand across all levels, with more than 24.5 million learners nationwide. Major goals on universal education and literacy were basically achieved, while the proportion of trained workers holding diplomas or certificates reached nearly 30%.

Ho Chi Minh City steps up law enforcement on fishing vessel monitoring system

Ho Chi Minh City has 4,449 fishing vessels, of them 4,301 equipped with VMS devices, making up 96.67%. Between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2025, authorities found 1,729 cases of vessels losing VMS connection for six hours or more, issuing fines in 196 cases totalling nearly 6.6 billion VND (about 252,000 USD)
