Vietnam won a gold medal at the xiangqi (Chinese chess) event at the World Mind Games in Beijing, China.

Master Nguyen Hoang Yen triumphed in the women's individual category, followed by Tang Sinan of China and Jia Dan from the United States.

Last year, Yen returned home with a silver.

On the men's side, Vietnam's Diep Khai Nguyen played below expectation, ranking seventh out of eight participants.

Meanwhile, Jiang Chuan of the hosts was awarded a gold. Two runners-up were Cao Yanlei of Macau and Wong Hok Him from Hong Kong.

This year Games organisers invited 150 participants from 37 countries and territories. Apart from xiangqi, they competed from December 11-17 in bridge, chess, and draughts, seeking to win 1.4 million USD in award money.-VNA
